12.02.2019 - 2019 DeGEval Annual Conference on ʻevaluation and sustainability’: call for proposals

Sustainability presents a major challenge for evaluation. Sustainable results can, by definition, only be observed following a period of time after the end of a measure, a point in time when many evaluations have already been completed. This challenge is compounded by the fact that, the longer the period over which sustainable changes need to be substantiated and the stronger the multidimensional interactions to be identified, the more difficult it is to obtain the much sought-after evidence of causal relationships.

As well as being relevant to environmental issues, sustainability has a long tradition as an evaluation criterion in the field of development cooperation, and is becoming increasingly important within the context of the global 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Since the introduction of the 2030 Agenda, development cooperation can only considered successful if it is designed in a sustainable manner, and evaluation is regarded in the Agenda as an important component of sustainable development.

Against this backdrop, sustainability and its role for and in evaluations is the central theme of the 22nd Annual Conference of the German Evaluation Society (DeGEval).

DEval is responsible for the local organisation of the conference, which will be held at the University of Bonn from 11 to 13 September 2019. DEval Director Professor Jörg Faust: ʻWe are delighted to be organising this year’s Annual Conference of DeGEval. The theme “sustainability in evaluation” fits in perfectly with DEval’s clear focus on the evaluation of sustainable development and the promotion of this in development cooperation.’

We are keen to receive contributions on the following topics in particular:

- Sustainability in different fields of evaluation

- Examining sustainability

- Sustainability and programme evaluation

- Contributions to the evaluation of sustainability

The deadline for contributions is 10 March 2019.
