15.01.2020 - Playing the Long Game: The journey towards integrating human rights and gender equality in UN system evaluations

In 2006, the UN system began taking steps to more systematically integrate human rights and gender equality in evaluations. The United Nations Evaluation Group constituted a Working Group to focus on this issue. A year later, UNIFEM/UN Women Evaluation Office was also created with a mission to advocate for human rights and gender responsive evaluation as part of its DNA. In the years since, we have seen a lot of progress in this area from guidance documents, norms and standards and accountability mechanisms to support these efforts across the system and beyond. At the same time, we can also recognize that the journey is not over. There is more that needs to be done to make adding “human rights and gender equality” a redundancy when describing any evaluation.

Shravanti Reddy (UN Women) has been working in the UN system since 2006 and with UN Women as an Evaluation Specialist for over ten years. She will give a first-hand account of the UN journey towards integrating human rights and gender equality in evaluation and the lessons learned along the way. Ms. Reddy will cover everything from definitions and methods and accountability mechanisms, and some of the persistent challenges and gaps. She will also address the importance of process and the need for continued advocacy and accountability in this area among all working in evaluation.
